Whose Children? Protecting unaccompanied migrant children in Europe: a case of diffused responsibility?
The years 2015-2016 saw an unprecedented number of refugees arriving in the European Union. In 2016 nearly every one in four asylum applicants in the EU was a child. Despite this influx of child refugees, the efficiency and adequacy of European and national responses to address the situation of this vulnerable group has been limited and questionable. This presentation sets out to investigate the factors and reasons explaining the failure of EU and national policy interventions to protect unaccompanied migrant children (UAMs) during the recent refugee crisis.
