Breakfast-seminar: Is it always appropriate to participate? Child welfare staff’s perspective on when to exclude children from conversations about visitation

Our “Breakfast Seminar for practitioners” (Barnevernfrokost) is a video seminar which aims to communicate important research to professionals and students on the topic of child welfare and protection. While the webinar is originally conducted in Norwegian, this article presents a summary of the content both in Norwegian and English.

Video: Doctoral candidate in social sciences Iselin Huseby Lie, from OsloMet, gave a presentation titled “Benefits and Challenges of Child Participation for Contact Visits – Experiences from Research on Child Welfare Practices.”

Social workers generally believe that children should be involved in child protection processes, a field that is an integral part of their work. However, previous studies show that children often feel excluded and unheard. In her research, Iselin Huseby Lie explores why social workers tend to leave children out of discussions about contact visits.

In our latest Barnevernfrokost, we discussed the importance of child participation in child welfare practices in Norway. Doctoral candidate Iselin Huseby Lie researches, among other things, the participation of children placed in care and issues related to visitation. In this edition of the Barnevernfrokost, Iselin Huseby Lie discussed how common views of children—as rights holders, vulnerable, and immature—shape decisions on their participation, and she suggested ways to expand the concept of conversations to better engage children. This seminar tackles a highly relevant topic, especially for students, teachers, and workers in the child protection service.
