Get to know Layne
What is your background?
I have a master’s degree in social work and am clinically licensed to practice as a therapist in the United States. For the past 3 years, I have worked as a therapist providing counseling services for youth with histories of trauma, child welfare involvement, and suicidal behaviors. I also have a specialization in research and have worked on projects related to adolescent mental health, impacts of trauma, and paternal incarceration.
And a place you’ve been where you’d like to go back?
I spent time hitchhiking in Scotland. I would love to go back and explore more, especially Isle of Skye and Oban, maybe this time with my own car!
What does a typical day look like for you?
This is difficult to answer since I just recently switched from being a therapist to working as a research assistant! I wish I was a morning person, but I am just not. So, typically I sit with coffee for a bit to get adjusted to the day. I prioritize lunching with colleagues and outside when possible. Then after work, I typically like to go for a quick jog and do other leisure activities, such as reading and exploring Bergen.
Is there a book you’d recommend in your field?
This isn’t exactly a book recommendation but more of a therapy recommendation (I am a previous therapist after all). Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is one of the primary therapy modalities I provided. Unlike other therapies, this one requires the therapist to also practice the therapeutic skills and be held accountable to acting skillfully. Learning and practicing DBT skills both professionally and personally shifted the way I view and function in the world. I recommend incorporating some of these skills into your life too!
What’s on your nightstand?
You will always find a fiction novel on my nightstand. I can’t go to bed without reading. Right now, I am working through the Poppy War Trilogy, which is my first experience reading a fantasy series. I usually prefer more classic literature. Definitely open to book and bookstore recommendations!
