Cross-national Experiences of Foster Care

This project explores the differences between Norwegian and US welfare state ideologies, focusing specifically on child welfare.

The project will examine if or how these welfare state ideologies are reflected in the daily experiences of foster youth. Drawing on samples of former foster youth in the US (California) and in Norway who are making positive transitions into adulthood, this study uses focus groups to examine the characteristics of foster care that contribute to positive outcomes.

Research apprentices – all former foster youth – will be engaged in conducting the research. Expected outcomes from the project include findings that are relevant to foster care policy and practice improvements in both countries.
