Breakfast-seminar: Consensual services in child welfare

VIDEO: Voluntary services based on consent given by parents and children (and/or other relevant parties) make the core of child welfare services in the Nordic countries. Nevertheless, there is also heavy criticism about voluntariness: is it just hidden coercion?

This short presentation, based on a study carried out in Finland, listening to social workers, children and parents as well as analysing case documents and legislation, argues  that indeed there is a fair reason to be reflective about voluntariness but it would be simplistic to ignore it as an option.

Tarja Pösö is Professor at the University of Tampere (Finland) and Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Research on Discretion and Paternalism.
